TRY TO GET THE MEANING OF "TRY"

     We can use the verb 'try' in the following two structures.

1.subject + try + gerund (verb+ing)

2. subject + try +to + infinitive ( verb)

                   The meaning of these two structures are different. First let`s see the first structure.
                     A gerund is placed after "try". Here "try" means ' make an experiment', do something to change a situation or to get a better result.

See the example.
   Paul tried following an online business English course.
This sentences means that Paul followed the course. Sometimes he needed the knowledge of business English too get a job or a promotion. So he did the course. the action of following the course is completed. but the sentence does not tell us whether Paul got what he wanted (desired effect)

1. The child tried listening to some educational CDs.
2. The lecturer tried to make the students to use online dictionaries.
3. Ann tried referring Cambridge Idioms dictionary.
