Did  you know that  RHYTHM is the longest world that does not include a vowel ( a,e,i,o,u)

Which one is correct? There is or There are

This the is correct way to use 'is' and 'are' with 'there'.

When the first noun in a list is singular or uncountable, we use 'There is'.
There is a book a pen and a bag on the table.

There is a cat and some dogs in the garden.
In the second sentence, the first noun (a cat) is singular but the second noun (dogs) is plural. Here we use is according to the first noun.  We can change this sentence a little without changing the meaning. That is writing the plural noun first. Then it looks OK
There are some dogs and a cat in the garden.

I am sure now you can apply this rule to the past tense also. 'there was"  and ' There were'.
However in informal speech we can use 'There is ' with plural nouns.Look at this dialogue.

A-  Anything to read?
B-  Yes, there is some books on the table.
Remember not to write this in exams.
