CHRISTMAS  OR  XMAS

Xmas is an abbreviation which has a very limited range of acceptable use.

It is no shorter than Christmas so there is no reason to use it in speech. It should not be used in formal writing.

X is not an arbitrary letter. It represents the initial letter of Christ`s name in Greek.
